From humble beginnings:
Market Body Works, Inc. is a fourth generation family owned and operated business that was founded in 1912 by our great grandfather. Originally the business was a blacksmith shop named Market Body & Coach Works where our great grandfather repaired and maintained horse drawn carriages.
As industrialization and modernization took hold in Newark, our great grandfather found himself retooling to be able to repair a new contraption- the automobile.
From 1909 to 1927 the Ford Motor Company manufactured the first affordable automobile, the Model T, and opened travel to the common middle-class of America.
Newark was a mecca of business, wealth and prosperity and the automobile replaced the horse and buggy as the primary means of transportation.
Our great grandfather seized the opportunity to update his business and transformed his blacksmith shop into an auto body repair shop. No longer a "Smithy" his business prospered in the field of auto body repairs.
Circa 1941
In 1941 our grandfather, who now operated the family business, saw an opportunity to expand and purchased property at our current location along McCarter Highway. The business was renamed Market Auto Body. Later, in the 1960's, our family incorporated the business under the name Market Body Works.
Today, many of our customers still ask for our father "Smitty", whose nickname was derived from our great grandfather's profession. He is now enjoying retirement and spending time with his grandchildren. We are proud to be a part of Newark's great history and still enjoy servicing the people who make this city and state a great place to live and work. Through four generations our goals have not changed. Provide a top notch quality repair at a fair price and word of mouth will keep our customers coming back for generations.
